The people, places, and things that keep our inspiration alive.
Inspiration from Sam ‘Ohu Gon III, PhD
“Because he knows so many ways to destroy his natural environment, Man must now become its custodian and caretaker for his own sake. He must exercise mālama, because if he starts selling parts of his natural environment abroad for creature comforts, he will lose it all, and be unable to survive here. If he uses up his landscapes, mountains, valley and vistas, or if he degrades his air and waters, he will destroy the beauty and hence the spirit of Hawaiʻi, and in so doing, his own spirit. Mālama is thus an imperative. It is applicable to our entire lives in Hawaiʻi. It is applicable to all our transactions with each other, to all of our transactions with the overseas world, and to all of the transactions between society and nature. Each of these transactions must meet the test of mālama at all times, without exception.”
New Zealand’s Great Walks
The network of 9 thru-hiking trails was established 28 years ago to showcase the country's most spectacular places and protect the natural areas that were slowly deteriorating due to unregulated tourism. In the years since the creation of The Great Walks, New Zealand has become synonymous with glorious wilderness. New Zealand is the country people visit in order to adventure outdoors. This reputation generates revenue. From October 2019 to January 2020 (in just four months) The Great Walks generated $3.2 million.
